The 162-page report criticizes the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, alleging that it is led by "radical activists" and has shifted its focus from historical education to political activism. Bunch stated in an email to staff that the report does not accurately represent the museum's work and emphasized the institution's commitment to scholarship and integrity. He acknowledged the need for improvement but maintained that the museum's mission is to provide a comprehensive view of American history. A spokesperson for the Smithsonian confirmed the authenticity of Bunch's email. In response to the report, the Organization of American Historians condemned it, asserting that it aims to undermine the museum's efforts to make U.S. history accessible to all Americans. The OAH previously stated that no president has the authority to dictate the content of the Smithsonian's exhibitions, criticizing attempts to control the institution's operations.
