Ana Maria Archila, commissioner of the Mayor's Office for International Affairs, was to meet with Iravani but was forced to cancel after discussions with administration officials. The Mayor's Office confirmed that the meeting would not occur. This intervention comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran, particularly following President Donald Trump's declaration that a ceasefire was over at a NATO summit. The situation has escalated with ongoing airstrikes between the two nations. Archila's meeting would have followed Iranian missile attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, leading to U.S. military retaliation against Iranian vessels. Mamdani has publicly opposed the war with Iran, while Archila has expressed less criticism of the conflict. Archila, appointed in February, has no prior diplomatic experience. This incident is not the first time the Trump administration has intervened in Mamdani's government dealings with foreign leaders, as seen in a previous instance involving Colombia's outgoing President Gustavo Petro.
