On January 6, 2021, Brian W. Lynch, a federal prosecutor in Maryland, was present at the Capitol during the events of that day. Lynch, who was appointed to run a national task force targeting alleged left-wing political violence, was confirmed by a Department of Justice (DOJ) official to have been present but did not enter the Capitol or commit any violations. Lynch's presence had not been publicly reported until now, more than five years later. Michael Romano, a former deputy chief in the DOJ’s Capitol Siege Section, expressed surprise that Lynch was not identified during the investigation into the events of January 6.
