Canadian Woman Detained After Allegedly Slapping Teen Over Political Clothing

A video released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shows a Canadian woman, Kaitlyn Tracey, allegedly slapping a teenage girl on a New Jersey boardwalk. The incident occurred after Tracey confronted the girl and her friends, who were wearing clothing with the words "Trump" and "ICE". Tracey, who entered the U.S. on a visa that expired in September 2024, is now in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody pending removal proceedings. A DHS spokesperson stated that Tracey overstayed her visa and is among those arrested by ICE who have been charged with or convicted of a crime. Tracey's husband, Matthew Geroni, claims the incident has been exaggerated and that his wife has never been in trouble before. The alleged victim reported that Tracey verbally berated her group before striking her. After the incident, Tracey was identified through social media and passport information. Geroni has sought legal assistance for his wife and created a GoFundMe campaign for her legal expenses, which was later removed for violating platform policies. The case has garnered attention, including reactions from lawmakers. Tracey is scheduled to appear in court on August 4.
