Bernie Sanders Discusses Michigan Senate Primary Dynamics

Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., spoke at a campaign rally in Detroit on Friday, addressing the upcoming Democratic Senate primary in Michigan. He emphasized that the election is not solely about Representative Haley Stevens, D-Mich., but rather about whether the 'billionaire class' can prevent progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed from winning. Sanders stated, 'In all due respect to Haley Stevens, everybody knows that this is not an election between her and Abdul. This is an election between Abdul and the billionaire class.' He noted that significant financial contributions from wealthy donors and outside groups have been directed against El-Sayed, whom he supports. Sanders claimed that these groups have already spent $50 million to defeat El-Sayed, and highlighted that super PACs supporting Stevens are spending approximately $26.9 million on television ads compared to around $2.1 million for El-Sayed. The Michigan Senate primary is viewed as a critical contest reflecting the divide within the Democratic Party, with El-Sayed endorsed by Sanders and other progressives, while Stevens has support from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and retiring Senator Gary Peters. The primary is set for August 4, 2026, and the winner will likely face Republican Mike Rogers in the general election.
