CDC Expands Ebola Screening to Atlanta Airport

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has expanded its Ebola screening measures to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as of Saturday. This allows Americans returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan a second entry point for mandatory screening. Previously, Washington Dulles International Airport was designated as the first site for such screenings. The Department of Homeland Security has mandated that all flights from these countries within the last 21 days be diverted to Dulles Airport. The CDC's enhanced public health entry screening is part of a broader strategy that includes overseas exit screening and post-arrival public health monitoring. According to the World Health Organization, there are currently 82 confirmed cases of Ebola in the DRC, with seven confirmed deaths and nearly 750 suspected cases linked to the Bundibugyo strain, which has a fatality rate of about 40%. Earlier this week, the Trump administration implemented a ban on non-citizens who had traveled to the affected countries in recent weeks from entering the U.S. Additionally, U.S. border officials diverted an Air France flight to Canada after discovering a passenger from the DRC was onboard, which violated the new entry restrictions. Ebola spreads through bodily fluids and can lead to severe symptoms, including excessive bleeding and organ failure. Former CDC director Dr. Robert Redfield has expressed concern that the outbreak could escalate into a significant regional pandemic.
