Pentagon Official Criticizes OpenAI's Dean Ball on Regulatory Views

A senior official from the Trump administration criticized Dean Ball, OpenAI's head of strategic futures, regarding his views on AI regulation. Ball, who was involved in the administration's AI Action Plan, suggested that the Trump administration might create regulatory risks surrounding the use of Chinese AI models. This prompted David Sacks, an outside AI adviser, to question whether Ball was promoting regulatory capture that could benefit OpenAI. Ball clarified that he did not advocate for discouraging Chinese AI through unjustified regulations. Emil Michael, the Defense under secretary, referred to Ball as the 'supreme village idiot' of the AI industry, arguing against Ball's claim that government agencies have blocked employees from using Chinese AI through a democratic process. The Pentagon's approach to criticism has previously led to strained relationships with AI companies, as seen in its conflict with Anthropic earlier this year. The Pentagon, OpenAI, and Ball did not respond to requests for comment.
