Driver Escapes Injury After Metal Pipes Pierce Sedan in Orange County Crash

A driver escaped with minor injuries after metal pipes from a pickup truck collided with their sedan on a highway in Orange County, California, on Thursday. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the incident occurred when a white pickup truck carrying unsecured metal pipes crashed into a gray sedan. Following the collision, the unsecured pipes were propelled into the sedan through the rear window. Photos from the CHP showed multiple pipes lodged in the shattered windshield of the sedan. The CHP emphasized the importance of securing cargo, citing that unsecured loads contribute to numerous accidents and fatalities each year. They advised drivers to use ropes, netting, bungee cords, or straps to secure their loads and to avoid overloading vehicles. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, road debris was a factor in approximately 53,000 crashes annually from 2018 to 2023, resulting in around 5,500 injuries and 72 deaths each year.
