David Hearn Arrested for Allegedly Damaging the Reflecting Pool

David Hearn, a 67-year-old former Olympic canoeist, was arrested on June 19 after allegedly damaging the sealant of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Hearn, who paddled around the pool as part of a canoeing event nearly 50 years ago, was accused by federal prosecutors of "forcefully and violently" ripping up the sealant, which could result in a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. His lawyers contend that the charges are unfounded and that he was investigating the pool's condition rather than causing damage. Following Hearn's arrest, several others were also detained for similar actions at the pool, all facing misdemeanor charges. Hearn's case is notable for its felony charges, and he has pleaded not guilty. The U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro has labeled the prosecutions related to the Reflecting Pool as a priority, while Hearn's supporters argue that the charges reflect a broader issue of government overreach. The Reflecting Pool has been the subject of controversy following a renovation ordered by former President Trump, which has been criticized for its execution. A court hearing for Hearn is scheduled for August.
