Illegal Immigrant Sues Trump for $75 Million Over Political Remarks

Brandon Ortiz-Vite, a 27-year-old illegal immigrant serving a prison sentence for the murder of Ruby Garcia in Michigan, has filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump. Ortiz-Vite claims he faced humiliation when his case was used in political discussions and is seeking $75 million in damages, a public apology, and U.S. citizenship. Ortiz-Vite is currently serving a 39 to 102-year sentence after being convicted of second-degree murder in March 2024. He alleges that Trump's comments during a campaign event, where Ortiz-Vite was labeled as 'America's problem,' contributed to his public humiliation. The lawsuit names Trump and White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Steven Cheung as defendants. Legal experts suggest the lawsuit is unlikely to succeed due to presidential immunity and the nature of the claims. Ortiz-Vite, who was previously deported and had been under the DACA program, expressed feelings of anxiety and despair regarding his public portrayal. He admitted to taking responsibility for his actions but criticized the use of his case for political gain.
