Colorado candidate Melat Kiros advocates for increased immigrant representation in government

Melat Kiros, a candidate backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, recently called for more immigrants, particularly those with heritage in the global south, to enter political office. Speaking at the Wa’Ela Tigrai event in Denver, Kiros emphasized the need for representatives who understand the exploitative nature of the United States on a global scale. She highlighted her recent victory over incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary as a step toward changing the political landscape. Kiros stated, "There's a certain reckoning that we are going to have to have with the global world order as it exists today..." She expressed that the current system is functioning as designed, which she found disheartening during her time in law school. Kiros, who was previously terminated from her position at Sidley Austin law firm, also mentioned her commitment to fighting for change, regardless of the outcome of her candidacy.
