New Jersey removes 6,600 noncitizens from voter rolls ahead of 2024 election

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced on July 21, 2026, that approximately 6,600 noncitizens have been removed from the state's voter rolls. This action was taken after a software error in the Motor Vehicle System allowed individuals without legal status to be registered to vote between June 2023 and June 2024. Sherrill stated that some individuals had indicated they were not citizens but were still registered due to the software issue, which was corrected in June 2024. Preliminary findings indicate that fewer than 400 of those improperly registered voted in the previous elections. Following the discovery of this issue, Sherrill ordered an investigation and the removal of ineligible voters. She expressed her concern over the failures that led to this situation and emphasized the need for accountability. Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had previously reported that there may be a significant number of noncitizens registered to vote across several states, including New Jersey, California, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.
