CNN analyst Van Jones expressed concerns about the Democratic Party's direction, warning that it risks undermining itself by embracing what he describes as regressive ideas from its progressive wing. His remarks come amid a growing ideological debate within the party regarding the influence of progressive activists on issues such as policing, criminal justice, and immigration reforms.
Jones stated that while he supports a youth movement in progressive politics, he believes some activists are pushing extreme ideas. In a post on X, he remarked, "I’ve been waiting my whole life to see a youth movement do what it’s doing. But it’s being hijacked by people who are putting in nutty ideas, supporting terrorists, nutty ideas saying we don’t need cops and prisons. We can’t deport anybody, even if they rape somebody."
He emphasized the importance of distinguishing between legitimate progressive policies and what he considers radical positions. "If we can’t say right from wrong, if we can’t say good from bad, if we can’t separate progressive ideas from regressive ideas, we’re going down the same pathway that has pulled the Republican Party into an unrecognizable shell of itself,” Jones stated.
Jones also criticized specific progressive figures, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, for promoting ideas he views as disconnected from core issues like affordability and healthcare. He reiterated that his criticisms are rooted in his identity as a progressive Democrat and not an opposition to reform. He concluded by stating that supporting Hamas and advocating for the abolition of police and borders are not progressive ideas, but rather regressive ones.
