Study Ranks Seattle Area Among Worst for First-Time Homebuyers Due to Rising Costs

A recent study has identified the Seattle-Tacoma area as one of the most challenging regions in the United States for first-time homebuyers, primarily due to increasing housing costs and limited affordability. The study conducted by WalletHub ranked Seattle 204th and Tacoma 190th out of 300 cities surveyed for first-time homebuyers. Local radio hosts Jake Skorheim and Spike O’Neill discussed the findings, highlighting concerns over affordability. A listener, Chris, expressed his frustration with home prices, stating that homes in the area are priced between $550,000 and $600,000 for a standard three-bedroom, two-bath home, making it difficult to find affordable options. Skorheim noted that the rising costs have made homes that were once considered affordable now seem excessively priced. Spike shared his experience of purchasing a home in the Seattle area for about $200,000 in the past, emphasizing the significant increase in housing prices over the years. According to NPR affiliate KUOW, as of February 2024, the average price of a starter home in Seattle was reported to be $535,000, with a monthly mortgage payment of $4,334. The study also noted that out of the 50 worst cities for first-time homebuyers, 36 are located in California.
