Immigration Status of Florida Man Killed During ICE Encounter Confirmed

Juan Jairo Coronilla Duran, a 28-year-old Mexican man, was killed on July 14 while fleeing from ICE agents in Florida. According to the Orlando-based nonprofit Colectivo Árbol, Duran was in the United States on a valid tourist visa. He had been vacationing in the U.S. for three weeks and had only been in Florida for three days before his death. Duran was struck by a tractor-trailer while attempting to escape from agents in a gas station parking lot. His death marks the third immigration enforcement-related fatality within a week. The Department of Homeland Security has not publicly confirmed Duran's identity. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that he was hit while running from ICE agents. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced an investigation into the deaths of Mexican nationals under the Trump administration, expressing condolences to the victims' families. In June, ICE agents arrested a record 43,138 immigrants, with many lacking a criminal history.
