South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham, sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, to serve the remaining months of her brother's term. McMaster made the announcement shortly after Lindsey Graham's death, stating it was an honor to ask Darline to continue her brother's work. Darline expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to support the president and the citizens of South Carolina.
Initially, it was assumed that Darline Graham would serve only as a caretaker for the final months of her brother's term, with no intention of running for the full six-year Senate seat. However, President Donald Trump later encouraged her to run for the full term, which she confirmed she would pursue in the upcoming special primary in August.
In an interview, Darline indicated that her focus would differ from her brother's, emphasizing issues like grocery prices and healthcare. She holds a B.S. from the College of Charleston and an M.A. in rehabilitation counseling from South Carolina State University, with experience in state agencies but no prior elected office.
The special Republican primary will also include Representatives Ralph Norman and Russell Fry, as well as businessman Mark Lynch. Political activity is expected to be subdued until after Lindsey Graham's funeral, with the primary scheduled for August 11.
