Sen. John Cornyn Threatens to Block Trump Nominees Over Foreign Aid Funding

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) has indicated he may block two of President Donald Trump’s ambassadorial nominees unless the administration releases over $1 billion in foreign aid for Africa. According to a report by Semafor, Cornyn intends to oppose the nominations of Kari Lake and Doug Mastriano unless funding through the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is made available. The Foreign Relations Committee is scheduled to consider Lake’s nomination on Wednesday. Cornyn stated, "The only way it seems like you can get the administration’s attention on some of these funding issues is by using the leverage to withhold votes on nominees." He emphasized the importance of releasing $1.3 billion in funding to save lives and advance U.S. interests in Africa. PEPFAR, initiated by President George W. Bush in 2003, is recognized as the largest commitment by any nation to combat a single disease. The White House's response to Cornyn's demands remains uncertain. This situation follows Cornyn's recent defeat in a GOP primary against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, which has been seen as a setback for Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD).
