Italian Authorities Seize 1,700 Pounds of Cocaine Hidden in Banana Shipment

Italian authorities seized approximately 1,700 pounds of cocaine concealed within pallets of bananas at the port of Vado Ligure, according to a statement from officials on Tuesday. The cocaine was divided into 650 packages and was found inside a refrigerated shipping container that had arrived from Ecuador. A field test confirmed that the substance was highly pure cocaine. This operation is noted as one of the largest anti-drug efforts at the port in recent years, with the shipment potentially valued at around 250 million euros, or nearly $290 million, if sold on the street market. The seizure followed a detailed analysis of shipping routes from South America to Vado Ligure, which is considered a significant entry point for goods into Europe and a target for drug traffickers. The Guardia di Finanza stated that this operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat international drug trafficking and protect vulnerable populations from the effects of such criminal activities.
