Former NFL kicker Jay Feely won the Republican primary for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District on July 21, 2026. Feely received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump during the campaign. He defeated former state lawmaker Joseph Chaplik and businessman John Trobough in a contest to replace Rep. David Schweikert, who is running for governor. The district is considered competitive for the upcoming general election, which will determine control of the House of Representatives.
Arizona’s 1st Congressional District includes parts of northeastern Maricopa County, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and Fountain Hills. The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has included Feely in its "MAGA Majority" program to support candidates in battleground districts.
The primary campaign included personal attacks, with Chaplik accusing Feely of having "imported Haitians." Feely, who has worked in Haiti for humanitarian efforts, defended his actions, stating that he helped two young Haitian men relocate to the U.S. and considers them family. Feely will now advance to the general election against Democratic candidates, including former state lawmaker Amish Shah and former television news anchor Marlene Galán-Woods.
