According to data from the Pew Research Center, only 20 percent of Canadians expressed confidence in Trump, compared to 52 percent who feel confident in President Biden. Furthermore, 79 percent of Canadians reported a lack of confidence in Trump.
Enten noted that this decline in confidence has contributed to a negative perception of the United States in Canada, with favorable views dropping from 54 percent in 2024 to 34 percent in 2026. Trump recently imposed a 50 percent tariff on most Canadian goods, citing unfair treatment of American products. He also criticized Canada for air pollution linked to wildfires, despite experts attributing the issue to climate change.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded to Trump's tariffs, stating that Canada would not continue to be bullied and would utilize all available resources to respond. Mark Carney, Canada's Prime Minister, indicated a willingness to negotiate regarding the tariffs, emphasizing the impact of the trade dispute on families in both countries. In response to the tariff threats, Canada has canceled a planned event to celebrate a new bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.
