Divisions Among House Democrats Over Mayor Mamdani's Proposal to Arrest Netanyahu

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's proposal to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has led to divisions among House Democrats. Some members support the proposal, while others argue that Mamdani lacks the legal authority to carry it out. Representative Rashida Tlaib stated, "Arrest him; he’s a war criminal," while Mamdani has acknowledged that the city does not have the independent legal authority to enforce the warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC). He called on the federal government to execute the warrant and stated that Netanyahu is "not welcome in New York City." Representative Summer Lee expressed her belief that Netanyahu is a war criminal but did not comment on Mamdani's authority. Representative Jerry Nadler pointed out that pursuing such an arrest would violate a treaty with the United Nations, which provides immunity for diplomats. The U.S. is not a member of the ICC and is not obligated to arrest individuals under ICC warrants. Mamdani's call for federal action follows a statement from former President Donald Trump asserting that Netanyahu would not be arrested.
