House Democrats Change Stance on Women's Sports Legislation Ahead of Midterm Elections

Several House Democrats have shifted their positions on legislation concerning transgender athletes in women's sports, aligning with Republicans as the midterm elections approach. Representatives Shomari Figures and Terri Sewell from Alabama voted in favor of an amendment to the defense policy bill that prohibits biological males from competing in women's sports in Department of Defense-run schools. This marks a change from their previous opposition to similar legislation last year. Figures' district has seen a demographic shift due to redistricting, making his re-election more challenging. The National Republican Congressional Committee has identified him as a key target. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and 202 other Democrats opposed the amendment, while all Republicans supported it. Figures stated that his views on transgender participation have been consistent, citing concerns about the implications of the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. The amendment's sponsor, Rep. Nancy Mace, emphasized that it aims to protect women's sports from what she describes as the consequences of gender ideology.
