Senate Republicans Block Effort to Halt Funding for Trump's New Air Force One

Senate Republicans blocked an attempt led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to prevent taxpayer funding from being used for upgrades to President Donald Trump's new Air Force One. The aircraft, a Boeing 747-8, was gifted to Trump by Qatar and has a base value of $400 million, with estimated upgrade costs reaching up to $1 billion. Schumer expressed concerns about the financial burden on taxpayers, stating that Americans are struggling with rising costs of living. He proposed the Presidential Airlift Security Act, which would restrict funding for aircraft previously owned by foreign governments. However, the proposal was opposed by Senator Deb Fischer, who argued that it could negatively impact national security by affecting other aircraft crucial for presidential safety during a nuclear threat. The White House confirmed that while the new Air Force One is safe for travel, it will undergo additional upgrades in the fall, during which time the president will use the old Air Force One.
