In May, she introduced an amendment to the FY27 Legislative Branch Appropriations bill that aimed to establish standards for assessing a member's ability to perform their duties without significant cognitive impairment. This amendment was rejected during a voice vote.
Gluesenkamp Perez has referred to the aging political class as a "gerontocracy" and expressed her intention to continue advocating for this issue. Some responses on social media indicate support from individuals across the political spectrum, including Republican candidate Daniel Miressi, who agreed with her stance.
However, there are also criticisms from various quarters. Some conservatives have suggested that the focus should be on broader issues, while others believe her proposal does not address the underlying fiscal challenges facing the country. Gluesenkamp Perez has previously highlighted the impact of aging lawmakers on public confidence in Congress and has called for younger representatives who can effectively address healthcare issues.
