Officials from the hometown of Nolan Wells are expressing support for their sheriff following accusations of negligence in the investigation of Wells' death. NAACP President Derrick Johnson criticized Mississippi officials for their handling of the case during a news conference where attorney Ben Crump discussed independent autopsy results. Johnson stated, "We're accusing them of being derelict in their duties," emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability.
Wells, 18, disappeared on July 4 after a boat trip to Horn Island, with his remains found two days later. Mississippi State Senator Jeremy England called Johnson's accusations "completely unfair," asserting that local law enforcement is committed to conducting a proper investigation.
Congressman Mike Ezell also voiced confidence in Sheriff John Ledbetter, who is overseeing the investigation. During the news conference, Crump noted a "red discoloration" on Wells' head, but the autopsy performed by Dr. Roger Mitchell could not determine a cause of death pending further investigation. Forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden suggested that the head injury might not indicate foul play.
Rev. Al Sharpton has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case, although authorities have previously stated that foul play is not suspected. Wells' friends reported him missing later that night after returning to the mainland without him.
