A recent Fox News national survey indicates significant support for voter ID laws as Congress debates the SAVE America Act, which would mandate photo identification for federal elections. The act, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives in February, is currently stalled in the Senate. The survey, conducted from July 17 to July 20, 2026, shows that approximately 83% of registered voters support requiring photo ID to register and 77% to vote. Support for voter ID has consistently ranged from 77% to 85% in Fox News polling since 2011.
The poll also reveals that nearly all Republicans (96% for registration, 95% for voting) favor the requirement, while about 8 in 10 independents (83%, 77%) and 72% of Democrats support it. Confidence in eligible voters being able to vote stands at 76%, though only 61% are confident that ineligible voters will be prevented from voting.
Regarding mail-in voting, nearly two-thirds (64%) of respondents favor universal mail-in voting, with support varying across party lines. While approximately 90% of Democrats and 70% of independents support mail-in voting, around 60% of Republicans oppose it. A slight majority (51%) express confidence that mail-in ballots will be counted accurately, with trust varying among party affiliations.
The survey also found that 70% of voters support counting ballots postmarked by Election Day, even if they arrive later. Overall, 60% of respondents are confident that the final vote count will be fair and accurate, although confidence levels differ among party lines. The poll was conducted by Beacon Research and Shaw & Company Research, involving 1,003 registered voters with a margin of error of ±3 percentage points.
