A recent Fox News national survey indicates significant support for voter ID laws as Congress debates the SAVE America Act, which mandates photo identification for federal elections. The act, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives in February, is currently under consideration in the Senate. The survey, conducted from July 17 to July 20, 2026, found that 83% of registered voters support requiring photo ID to register and 77% to vote. Support for voter ID has consistently ranged from 77% to 85% since 2011.
The poll shows that support for voter ID spans across political affiliations, with 96% of Republicans in favor of ID requirements for registration and 95% for voting. Approximately 83% of independents support ID for registration and 77% for voting, while 72% of Democrats back ID for registration and 62% for voting. Additionally, 85% of Hispanic voters and 82% of voters under 30 support requiring photo ID.
Regarding mail-in voting, nearly two-thirds (64%) of respondents favor universal mail-in voting, with support varying by party: 90% of Democrats and 70% of independents support it, while 60% of Republicans oppose it. Confidence in the accuracy of mail-in ballots is divided, with 51% expressing confidence that they will be counted accurately. Most voters (70%) support counting ballots postmarked by Election Day, even if they arrive later.
The survey also reveals that 64% of voters are confident that votes will be counted accurately in their state, compared to 53% at the national level. A majority (68%) believe state governments should have election authority rather than the federal government (31%). Overall, 60% of voters are confident that the final vote count will be fair and accurate, although confidence varies among political groups.
