FDA Investigates Second Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Linked to Lettuce

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating a second outbreak of cyclosporiasis after 72 individuals reported illness. This follows a broader outbreak linked to lettuce from Taylor Farms, which has affected approximately 4,000 people across the United States since May 1. Dr. Vin Gupta, a senior medical analyst, expressed concern over the simultaneous outbreaks and the lack of an identified source. He emphasized the importance of investing in surveillance to prevent large-scale outbreaks. The CDC has reported hundreds of hospitalizations due to the illness, but no fatalities have occurred. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated that the outbreak is under control and denied that budget cuts have impacted surveillance efforts. On July 18, the FDA indicated that a sample of lettuce from Taylor Farms tested positive for cyclospora, but this was later retracted as a false positive. Mexican Health Minister David Kershenobich confirmed that no evidence has been found linking the produce to the central Mexican state of Guanajuato.
