Health Expert Calls for Review of FDA's Response to Cyclosporiasis Outbreak

Frank Yiannas, a former food safety commissioner during President Donald Trump's administration, has called for an independent review of the federal government's response to a cyclosporiasis outbreak that has affected thousands. He criticized the FDA for a lack of strong leadership and the confusion among consumers due to mixed messages from officials. The outbreak, linked to contaminated Taylor Farms lettuce served at Taco Bell, has resulted in over 4,000 confirmed cases in the U.S., with an additional 7,400 cases under investigation across nine states, according to the CDC. Taylor Farms has initiated a voluntary recall of its lettuce but disputes the FDA's claims regarding the contamination. Yiannas emphasized the need for transparency from the FDA regarding its investigation process and the implications of a false positive test result. Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff has also criticized Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for his handling of public health programs, stating that funding cuts have left Americans vulnerable to health risks.
