Drone shows are increasingly being adopted in place of traditional fireworks at various public events, including concerts and Fourth of July celebrations. This shift is viewed by some as a safer and more environmentally friendly option. However, experts warn that the growing number of drones in the air can complicate security measures at large gatherings. Cordell Bennigson, CEO of R2 Wireless U.S. Operations and a retired Marine Corps officer, noted that while drone shows are impressive, they present new challenges for event security due to the crowded airspace.
Bennigson explained that the radio frequency (RF) spectrum, which includes wireless signals used by devices like cellphones and drones, can become congested during these shows. This congestion makes it harder for security personnel to detect unauthorized drones, as they can blend in with legitimate signals. He emphasized the importance of improving detection capabilities to identify potential threats amidst the noise of wireless transmissions.
Bennigson also highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in enhancing detection efforts, as AI can analyze large volumes of data quickly to identify unusual patterns. He called for a reevaluation of airspace monitoring strategies at various levels of government to address the challenges posed by the increasing prevalence of drones. Additionally, he pointed out that while radar technology can help detect unauthorized drones, it has limitations and should not be the sole method of surveillance.
As drone traffic continues to rise, regulatory adjustments may be necessary to ensure public safety at events and in urban environments.
