Increase in Black Bear Encounters Reported in Lake Tahoe Area

Black bears are increasingly entering homes in the Lake Tahoe area, prompting residents to invest in security measures. South Lake Tahoe police reported 174 bear-related calls this year, up from 97 during the same period last year, according to The Wall Street Journal. Some residents have experienced multiple break-ins, with one couple reporting a bear entering their home while they were washing dishes. In response to the growing number of encounters, homeowners are installing electric mats, reinforced doors, and other deterrents, with one resident spending approximately $7,500 on security upgrades. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife advises residents to eliminate food attractants and use bear-proof containers to prevent bear incidents. The rise in bear encounters has led to discussions among residents about the underlying causes of the problem.
