California Man Rescued After Over a Month Stranded at Sea

A 39-year-old man from California, Kai Sato, was rescued after being stranded at sea for more than a month. He set sail from the Catalina Islands on June 7, aiming to complete his first solo journey across the Pacific. However, two weeks into his trip, his mast broke, leaving him unable to navigate. Sato reported that he spent days in distress and considered taking his own life. After running out of gas while trying to return to shore, he began makeshift repairs to his boat using PVC pipes and kayak paddles. Despite running out of water by July 11, he survived by collecting condensation and eating fish and squid. On July 25, he spotted a Pasha Hawaii ship, which rescued him and provided food and clothing. Sato plans to continue sailing and is considering a trip to the Philippines in a larger boat.
