Prosecutors Signal Opposition to Luigi Mangione's Federal Plea Deal Amid Murder Trial

Manhattan prosecutors have indicated they may oppose a federal plea deal for Luigi Mangione if it interferes with his upcoming murder trial in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. In a letter from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, it was noted that they are aware of reports suggesting Mangione might seek a guilty plea in a separate federal case before the state trial commences. Prosecutors warned that they could inform the federal judge of any potential conflicts with the New York prosecution. This follows a June hearing where U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett postponed Mangione's federal trial to January 2027, allowing the New York murder trial to proceed first.
