San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan sustained multiple injuries, including a broken nose, hand, and three ribs, in a car accident on July 14, 2026. The team reported that he required 40 stitches to his face and will have a limited role during training camp. The crash occurred near Shanahan's home in Northern California when his vehicle collided with an SUV. Authorities indicated that neither driver was injured, and both cooperated without signs of impairment. General manager John Lynch stated that the medical team will determine Shanahan's return to full duties. Former NFL quarterback Chris Simms, a friend of Shanahan, noted that he nearly lost his right eye in the incident and expressed concern for the other driver involved. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster will serve as acting head coach in Shanahan's absence. Shanahan has been with the 49ers since 2017 and is the son of former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.
