UN Calls for Renewable Energy to Power Data Centers by 2030

The United Nations has called for all data centers to be powered by renewable energy by 2030, emphasizing the need for transparency regarding their energy, water, and land impacts. This initiative comes amid rising electricity demand for data centers, which is expected to double in the next four years. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the goal reflects the urgency of the climate crisis and the increasing electricity demand from AI and data centers. However, energy analysts express skepticism, indicating that achieving this goal would require significant changes to power sectors worldwide. Michael Thomas, founder of Cleanview, noted that decarbonizing most power grids in less than five years is unlikely. The UN's initiative has been framed around renewable energy, excluding nuclear power, as the organization seeks to ensure that the expansion of AI does not negatively impact communities and future generations. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), renewable energy is set to grow faster than any other power source, with projections indicating that it could account for over one-third of data centers' total generation by 2030.
