A nonprofit organization representing over 400 former U.S. intelligence officials has requested Congress and inspectors general to investigate a CIA document declassified by the White House during President Donald Trump's recent address regarding U.S. elections. The group, Steady State, expressed concerns that the document may have been created to support Trump's claims of Chinese interference in the 2020 election and possibly drafted with input from the White House, violating CIA guidelines.
In a letter to the Senate and House Intelligence Committees, Steady State suggested that the document, titled "Sensitive PRC Reporting from 2018 – 2020," lacked context and definitive conclusions from the U.S. Intelligence Community. The letter stated that the document appeared to be a compilation of CIA raw reporting, potentially assembled at the direction of the White House for Trump's speech.
Steady State noted several anomalies in the document, including the absence of identifiable authorship and sourcing methodology, and called for a thorough investigation by oversight committees to ensure the integrity of the intelligence community.
