Kyle Shanahan Admits Fault in Car Crash, Sustains Injuries

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged his responsibility for a car crash that occurred on July 14, resulting in multiple injuries that have limited his participation in training camp. Shanahan clarified to reporters that he caused the accident after taking his eyes off the road to retrieve his phone, which had fallen between the seats. A clerical error in the California Highway Patrol database initially attributed the accident to the other driver involved. Shanahan was not cited for violating laws regarding cell phone use while driving. He reported that he was traveling at 20 mph at the time of the crash and did not lose consciousness or experience amnesia. He sustained broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken hand, and a severe concussion, requiring 40 stitches for facial cuts. Shanahan's friend, Chris Simms, mentioned that Shanahan was close to losing his right eye due to the severity of his injuries. General Manager John Lynch indicated that Shanahan would be in concussion protocol, while assistant head coach Chris Foerster is temporarily taking over his duties. The 49ers are scheduled to open their season against the Los Angeles Rams on September 10 in Australia.
