Polls Close in Georgia for Special Election to Fill Congressional Vacancy

Polls have closed in Georgia as two races in different parts of the country take place on Tuesday. The death of Rep. David Scott in April created a vacancy in a district that includes the southern and eastern Atlanta suburbs of Stockbridge, Conyers, and Snellville. The special election will determine who will complete Scott's term. In South Dakota, a gubernatorial runoff is occurring between incumbent Gov. Larry Rhoden and bitcoin investor Toby Doeden. Rhoden, who assumed office after former Gov. Kristi Noem was appointed to a federal position, is favored to win. The runoff is significant as South Dakota has not elected a Democratic governor since the 1970s. In Georgia, Democrats are expected to retain Scott's seat in the upcoming general election. Several candidates are competing to fill the vacancy, including Scott's daughter and former Mississippi judge Carlos Moore, who has criticized Scott's tenure. The winner of the special election will serve until January, with Georgia state Rep. Jasmine Clark already nominated for the full term and favored against Republican Jonathan Chavez in November.
