The officials aim to persuade Senate leaders to prioritize passing a budget resolution that would facilitate the reconciliation process, while postponing discussions on a potential debt ceiling increase.
The proposed resolution includes $73 billion for defense, $12 billion for farm aid, and $10 billion to encourage states to adopt provisions from the SAVE America Act. Key figures such as Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought and Legislative Affairs Director James Braid will present a three-point argument emphasizing the importance of funding for military personnel, agriculture, and election security.
Additionally, the White House is seeking to ensure that the reconciliation blueprint allows for flexibility in passing various components of the SAVE Act, which includes measures like requiring photo ID for voting and proof of citizenship for voter registration. Majority Leader John Thune indicated that the reconciliation process could involve multiple committees to maximize the potential for passing the legislation before the Senate's August break. The White House has clarified that raising the debt limit will not be included in this package, with that issue potentially addressed in a future legislative session.
