House Progressives Introduce Green New Deal Legislation for Public Schools

A group of House progressives, led by Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), has introduced a bill aimed at establishing a Green New Deal for public schools. A similar bill proposed five years ago by former Representative Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) sought to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into grants for public schools to facilitate clean energy upgrades and promote curriculum changes focused on social and environmental equity. The previous legislation included provisions for developing community-driven curricula and diversifying the workforce. The Sunrise Movement, a political organization advocating for progressive policies, is also supporting the initiative. Representative Tim Walberg (R-Mich.), chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, criticized the legislation, stating that schools should prioritize core academics over ideological programs. This renewed push for a Green New Deal comes amid ongoing divisions within the Democratic Party, with self-identified democratic socialists challenging establishment Democrats in primaries nationwide.
