The Interior Department has requested an additional $10 million in federal funding to cover costs associated with various Freedom 250 events held on the National Mall, as revealed by Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR). The funding is intended to reimburse the National Park Service for its work during events such as the Rededicate 250 prayer event, the Great American State Fair, and the July Fourth fireworks show.
Merkley, who is the ranking member of the appropriations subcommittee overseeing funding for the Interior Department, expressed his disapproval of the request in a letter to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. He stated that it is unacceptable for taxpayers to cover the costs of Freedom 250, which had already received $150 million in appropriated funds, with the expectation that private donations would cover any remaining expenses.
The senator questioned the need for additional taxpayer funding, given that the original funding was supposed to be sufficient. The Interior Department cited elevated security needs due to recent threats against events as a reason for the additional funding request. They stated that the funding would help address expenditures related to heightened security measures necessary for public safety.
Merkley has requested a response from Burgum regarding how the National Park Service and Freedom 250 have utilized the initial $150 million in funding by August 7. While many Freedom 250 events have concluded, preparations are underway for the upcoming IndyCar Series Grand Prix race in downtown Washington, D.C., scheduled for August 22-23.
