Barnes, who received an endorsement from Senator Adam Schiff, did not specify which candidate he believes will secure the nomination. His decision to suspend his campaign comes as allegations of past misconduct related to inappropriate advances in the workplace are reportedly under investigation by The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. A spokesperson for Barnes stated that there are no allegations of misconduct against him.
Following Barnes' exit, the remaining prominent candidates for the Democratic nomination include state Representative Francesca Hong and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. Hong has garnered support from notable progressives and raised approximately $709,000, while Crowley has raised $250,000 and has the endorsement of outgoing Governor Tony Evers.
In his video, Barnes called for unity among Democrats to defeat presumptive Republican nominee Tom Tiffany in the upcoming general election, urging collective efforts to address healthcare issues facing Wisconsinites. The gubernatorial primary is scheduled for August 11, 2026.
