Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson announced the appointment of Andre Sayles as the interim police chief on Friday, following the resignation of Police Chief Shon Barnes. Barnes resigned after a shooting incident at the Bite of Seattle food festival, which resulted in two fatalities and four injuries. Mayor Wilson stated that Sayles, who previously served as a police chief in Wisconsin, was chosen for his experience and community-focused approach to policing.
Barnes faced criticism after the shooting, which he described as targeted and gang-related, although he noted that the victims were not connected to the suspects. One arrest has been made, and another suspect has died. Sayles confirmed that the department is continuing its investigation into the incident and is seeking additional suspects.
In his remarks, Sayles emphasized the importance of community safety and announced plans to increase police presence at upcoming summer events. Mayor Wilson is also in the process of searching for a permanent replacement for Barnes, stating that the selection will involve community input and focus on leadership qualities that promote operational excellence and organizational change.
