Google Discontinues AI Image Editing Feature in Google Earth

Google has discontinued a feature in Google Earth that was launched on July 30, 2026, allowing users to edit satellite images using AI and text prompts. This tool enabled users to create altered images of real-world locations. Henk van Ess from Digital Digging generated images that included controversial elements, such as refugees near the Mexican border and a bomb crater by a hospital in Gaza. Initially, Google stated that images created with the tool would include a digital watermark and that the company would prevent the creation of images on harmful topics. However, just one day after the launch, Google issued a statement announcing the discontinuation of the feature.
