Scott Galloway Critiques NYC Mayor's Property Owner Database

Scott Galloway, a liberal podcaster and NYU professor, criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's new database that identifies affluent property owners potentially subject to a proposed pied-à-terre tax. Galloway expressed concerns that the database, which is publicly accessible, could expose property owners to harassment and safety risks. The database was released by the city's Department of Finance, which stated that its publication is required by state law. Galloway described the list as a 'wanted poster' for property owners and questioned the rationale behind its release, particularly in light of public safety concerns. He noted that 95% of the individuals on the list would not be subject to the tax and emphasized that the publication could imply wrongdoing among successful individuals. In response, Mamdani's office clarified that the property tax rolls are published in accordance with the law and that the database reflects all properties across the city, not just those subject to the new tax. The mayor emphasized that the pied-à-terre tax would only apply to non-primary residences valued over $5 million.
