NASA opened a new wind tunnel at its Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, on July 31, 2026. This facility, named the Flight Dynamics Research Facility (FDRF), is the agency's first major wind tunnel built in over 40 years and cost $57 million. It will support research for various applications, including autonomous drones, experimental aircraft, and spacecraft for missions to the Moon and Mars.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, Virginia Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi, Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, and other officials. The FDRF replaces two older facilities and aims to enhance performance while reducing operational costs. Isaacman emphasized the importance of directing NASA's resources toward future missions rather than maintaining outdated infrastructure.
The FDRF features a vertical test section measuring 20 feet in diameter and 24 feet high, capable of generating airspeeds from 0 to 117 mph. It will be instrumental in testing technologies for entry, descent, and landing, which are critical for space missions. Additionally, the facility will help address advancements in aviation, including new aircraft designs and autonomous flight systems.
