President Donald Trump has initiated an appeal against a federal judge's ruling that questioned the legitimacy of a lawsuit he filed against the IRS. The lawsuit, which includes Trump, his sons, and the Trump Organization, was deemed to have been filed for an 'improper purpose' by U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams on July 13. This case led to the establishment of a $1.8 billion 'anti-weaponization' fund as part of a settlement that prevents the government from pursuing any payments from Trump and his family regarding pending tax claims.
Trump's legal team claims that the IRS allowed a politically motivated employee to leak confidential information about Trump and his organization. A former IRS contractor was convicted in 2023 for stealing and leaking Trump's tax records. The president's lawsuit against the IRS and the Treasury Department was filed in January, following a report that revealed he paid only $750 in federal income taxes for 2016 and 2017.
Judge Williams stated that Trump's lawsuit was intended to 'manipulate the judicial process' rather than to seek justice. She also indicated that the Justice Department could not present the settlement as a judicial agreement. Sanctions were ordered against acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward, with a recommendation for disciplinary action against one of Trump's attorneys. The settlement has created tension between two Republican senators and the Justice Department, affecting Blanche's nomination for attorney general. Trump acknowledged the fund's termination but did not comment on potential limitations regarding the tax deal.
