Fitness expert Jillian Michaels has cautioned against the trend of purchasing unregulated weight-loss peptides online and self-dosing. In an appearance on the "Fox News Rundown," she highlighted the health risks associated with these foreign-sourced, unapproved chemical compounds, which may include heart issues, vision loss, and hormonal imbalances. Michaels emphasized the importance of consulting a medical professional before using such substances, as many consumers are unaware of the true source of the products they buy.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken action against illegal sales and misleading marketing of GLP-1 compounds, issuing 30 warning letters to telehealth companies for false claims. FDA Commissioner Marty Makary stated that compounded drugs should not bypass the FDA's approval process. The FDA has also warned about unapproved GLP-1 drugs, noting numerous adverse event reports linked to these products.
Michaels attributed the rise in illegal sales to individuals seeking rapid weight loss, often influenced by extreme body transformations seen in popular culture. She pointed out that while FDA-approved GLP-1s may be appropriate for those with severe obesity or chronic health conditions, using unapproved peptides for minor weight loss poses significant risks. Potential severe side effects include vision loss and suicidal ideation. Additionally, she warned that discontinuing unregulated weight-loss compounds can lead to increased hunger and a cycle of yo-yo dieting.
