Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced on Saturday that her office will investigate Dr. Anthony Fauci following his invocation of the Fifth Amendment during a Senate hearing. Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, invoked this right 111 times during the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing, declining to answer questions from lawmakers.
Murrill noted that despite a federal pardon from President Joe Biden, Fauci could still face prosecution under state law. She stated, "Fauci lied," and referenced previous depositions where Fauci claimed not to recall key details of his actions. Louisiana will join Alabama and Florida in investigating whether Fauci committed any offenses that could be pursued in state courts.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry expressed support for the investigation, highlighting his previous role as Attorney General. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier also announced an investigation into Fauci following the Senate hearing, stating that all potential violations of Florida law are under review.
Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama commented that Fauci's federal pardon does not protect him from state prosecutions, as presidential pardons apply only to federal offenses. Tuberville, who is running for governor of Alabama, indicated that he would seek ways to hold Fauci accountable for actions taken during the pandemic.
