Former West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin stated he would not support any candidates who identify as socialists during an appearance on CBS' "Face the Nation". Manchin expressed strong opposition to socialist platforms, saying, "No way," when asked if he would ever support a socialist. He emphasized that while he supports good ideas, he cannot endorse what he described as "crazy stuff" associated with socialism.
Manchin criticized the socialist agenda, claiming it aims to dismantle key government structures and institutions. He highlighted the importance of law enforcement for maintaining safety, stating, "We want a crime-free area. We have to have police for that."
He also warned that aligning with socialist demands could jeopardize energy production, asserting, "There'll be no energy, OK? We have right now a tremendous amount of energy we're producing, and the world depends more on us than ever before."
Manchin's daughter, Heather Manchin, who joined him on the show, expressed concern about the Democratic Party's leadership, stating they fail to oppose far-left candidates and socialists. She remarked, "Control has now completely outweighed character."
The comments from Manchin and his daughter follow the success of several openly socialist candidates in Democratic primary elections across the country. A July Fox News poll indicated that 52% of Democrats viewed socialism favorably, compared to 41% for capitalism, with a general favorable view of socialism rising among registered voters from 27% to 30% over the past year.
